Muir Cheetah 1600 windlass
Author Last Post

Sorry to jump in a bit late, when i doubled the size of my anchor i swapped my Cheetah for a Jaguar.. it did not fit the exact same foot print but fits the area nicely. i actually have the original Cheetah with little use and none for 15 years, 24v (which made it hard to sell to most cruisers here in SE Asia. i would have offered it to you but the shipping would be more than the value.

i have also replaced the motor and shaft of my Jaguar, rebuilt the old parts for spares, it is easy to essentially have a new windlass in the old housing, if you are upgrading i suggest going up the the Jaguar, mine has been anchoring steadily for 15 years, quite a bit more umph than the original.

Philippines,

I'll hazard a guess that Muir was once offering two different motors in the same case size and calling both "Cheetah."

See Pic. Probably 20 years ago. Same as boat.

Good news the footprint will be the same! Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as a Muir 1600 "Cheetah". If yours is a 1600 then it is a "Cougar". And, if yours is a Cheetah then you're in luck: your replacement 2500 unit will match up to the existing deck holes.

If there remains any doubt, then measure the bolt hole distances on yours and compare to the manufacturer's deck templates.

How about the footprints of the 1600 Cheetah and the 2500 Cheetah. I don't have a Cougar.

Hi, Lisa.

The footprints of the 1600 "Cougar" and 2500 "Cheetah" are close, but not close enough to match. You can find the deck templates for each model on the Muir website. If upgrading to the 2500, I would replace the chain and swivel at the same time. I'm quite fond of the Mantus swivel.

So, my 20-year old windlass is toast. I want to replace it with the 2500 model. The current chainwheel is stamped "99". 1.What chain option do I need to select on the new model so I can use my current chain?

2. Is it a good idea to use the current chain? (I was planning to swap ends...)

3. Is the "footprint" on the deck the same for both?

Thanks!
