New Nameboards source
Brad Budinger

Since we had such a good discussion on maintaining the nameboards, I have a related question;

Is anyone aware of a source for new nameboards?

We recently took ownership of 55-70, formerly Finish Grade. When I took a closer look at the nameboards to have them rebranded, I found three previous names still there. The first was engraved, the second was vinyl lettering over a wrap cover and the third was a vinyl wrapped board screwed onto the original. Needless to say, all of the previous names must be removed to appease Poseidon for the renaming ceremony. To that end, I think it might be easiest and cleanest to simply replace the boards in thier entirety.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Brad,
A good cabinet maker or marine carpenter should be able to duplicate them. All the ones I've seen are teak. I disassembled mine to flat pieces in order to restore the weathered surface in the thickness planer then reassembled them. Nothing remarkable about their assembly, just glue joints, I recall maybe a spline on the outside corner of the running light platform.?.. If I were making a set, I'd probably dowel them since they tend to open at the glue joints.
Since swallowing the anchor, I keep occupied with some woodworking.
If you have trouble locating a source, I might be willing to fabricate replacements.
Yes, they are a lot of maintenance, I typically refreshed the finish every other year or so, they just add a lot to the classic look of the Selene when they're finished well.

Hi Brad...when we purchased 5371, our name boards were in similar condition. Rather than build new I opted to route out the original name and make teak inserts (see attached). We are fortunate to have a talented individual at our summer port inn VA who hand carved, and applied gold inlay and a black outline to the inserts.
