Transmission Breather Burping Oil
Author Last Post

Good point! My gearbox (like the majority) calls for straight 30 weight except for operation in higher temps which it never sees in northern waters. Those whose powertrains are equipped with thermostatially-controlled gear oil coolers may be running oil temps in the 175f range which would justify running the 40 stuff, but most straight pass coolers are maintaining the gear oil at much lower temps suggesting 30 as the better choice.

Jim & Ryan:

Be sure to read the docs for your specific transmission. My TwinDisc MG5114 specifies 40W oil, not 30W.

I would start by draining the gearbox, pulling and cleaning the strainer, refilling gearbox with the specified 30 weight oil, cleaning the vent cap, and checking if burping has resolved after running warm.

Hi,

The transmission on my Selene 47 is burping oil regularly. The fluid level looks right. Any thoughts on what to do? Relocate the breather into a reservoir?

Thanks!

There was at least one--if not more--threads on this in the old forum. I suggest doing some searches on the Main Forum archives and/or the Owners Only forum archives. I know this topic was discussed in the past....
