Jet Tern Grand Opening....
Author Last Post

Hi Mark,

The Crowley’s will attend the grand opening. Fly into HK a few days before and will stay for the excursions following the opening. Hoping to meet up with many owners and soon to be owners at this great event.

Hi, yes you are welcome! This place is ripe with WWII history, we often ride motorcycles on the Bataan Death March trail, it is marked every Km. Another fav is visiting the Corregidor Island, possibly where your father was stationed. The church near us was used to hold POWs. And if you really want to "dive into history" I love the WWII wreck diving here!
I look forward to meeting you at the event

Cheers
Brian

WOW!  Brian - that is a wonderful offer! Thank you for the hospitality.  I will be at the Grand Opening, and working on the build of Selene OE 6047, probably without Terry as we found out today that her bilateral total knee replacement surgery is scheduled for October 23, putting her rehab schedule in conflict with the Grand Opening.  Fortunately, we have a daughter who can assume my nurse aide duties in December and allow me to travel.  My father served in the US Army in the Philippines in WW2 and I would love to visit. I don't eat too much, don't snore too loud, rarely get into actual physical fights, occasionally become overstimulated and react with corresponding levels of enthusiasm, and sleep about four hours a night.  Will you still have me?

Jack Burgess, Selene 5388 Shangri-La and soon to be (Q2 2026) possibly another Shangri-la (still working on the name).

Welcome to SE Asia! For any Selener's coming, I would like to invite you to take the short hop from Hong Kong to Subic Bay yacht Club, Philippines. The following Saturday, the 13th, is the annual SBYC Lighted Boat Parade. I have been organizing this event for 7 years. Any Selener's who wish to visit can ride on Furthur for the parade. I can arrange hotel rooms at my member rate at the YC, https://subicbayyachtclub.ph/. This is a golden opportunity to visit the Philippines. There are short flights from HK to Clark International Airport, about 45 minutes away.
I look forward to seeing many you at the grand opening,

Cheers

M/Y Furthur,

It’s around $5k per couple from DC area to HKG during that time period.

Hi John:

The grand opening is the weekend of December 5-7, but "stay tuned" for more details from Selene Americas on events before and after the grand opening at the yard.

Fly into HKG (Hong Kong). If you do some tourist stuff up in Beijing, you might want to fly out of Beijing. There are a bunch of airports around that area, but PEK is the primary/central one.

Mark

What were the dates again? What airport to fly into?

Thanks,

John

More info and photos. The Marriott was around $100 USD per night for our room and is very nice. Four star hotel. The Shangri-La Kowloon in HK is Five star and more expensive, maybe $350 USD per night but includes huge buffet breakfast with everything known to man being served, pools, gyms, bars with pianists, restaurants, more. It was worth it.

A few more photos attached.

Corey -

Mark is correct. Terry and I were there in July and we will both return in December if her knee surgery recovery allows. I will be there for sure. The flight over and back from our area is a bear - no question. About 30 hours door to door. On our return trip we got the bonus of a Covid infection - I came down with it two days after getting home and then Terry got it from me - so I will mask on the flights in December. Pretty much over it now except for that dang cough.

But the trip itself was great. Flew into Hong Kong and Jet Tern had a driver waiting for us. Escorted us through customs and immigration with no issues. The bridge/tunnel to China is around 32 miles long i think - right through the ocean. The Marriott we stay at near the yard is pretty cool. We watched Typhoon Wipha blow 105 mph from our room on the 22nd floor. A couple of restaurants and bars are in the hotel (breakfast included) and great restaurants and shopping within walking distance. The drive by taxi to the shipyard is not long, maybe 20 minutes max. The shipyard is pretty cool and if you go you can tour our new vessel being constructed. We will be there to see the progress and make more decisions on the build - delivery is now set for May 2026,

A highlight for us was Hong Kong, which we visited for several days after our visit to the yard. We previously traveled all over China (in 2008) and it is such a big and interesting place. But Hong Kong is now one of our favorite cities in the entire world. We simply loved it - the touring, shopping, dining, culture, views, people and places were all awesome. There is even Disney Land if you want to go! That day we opted for a tram ride to see the Big Buddha and the Thatch Roofed Monastary. We still have more to do in HK and will stay there again this trip as well. We stayed at Hotel Shangri-La Kowloon, right in the center of everything and within walking distance to the Star Ferry and other attractions. I attach a few photos of the yard and HK.

You and Tracy should join us!

Hi Corey:

There's a really nice nearly new Marriott that's only about 15 minutes (when the traffic is reasonable) from the shipyard. I'll bug the SA guys about getting a room block. There's a bridge from Hong Kong to Zhuhai now, so you don't have to do the crazy ferry thing we used to have to do. I flew through HK a year ago and went directly over to the Marriott near the yard. No issues at all.

Mark

My biggest question is where does one stay there, how much does it cost,, etc? From DC it is an entire day “adventure” to Hong Kong. I assume that is where folks go first? We went to HK 10 years ago since it looked like the “climate” was going down the tubes. A friend of our was the right hand man for Jimmy Li who has been in jail almost since then

Jack Burgess here and I will be there also.  Hopefully, Terry can come.  She has bilateral knee replacement surgery scheduled for early to mid October so we will see.  Mark - are you going solo and, if so, can I count on you to close the bar with me on the 22nd floor of the Marriott at least once?

Jack

Hey Selene Friends:

I'm going to be going to China for the Jet Tern Grand Opening in December and I want to have a bunch of friends there. Is that not a good enough reason for you to attend? (OK.....maybe not??)

Seriously, it should be a ton of fun and the yard is amazing. I was there a year ago when the new yard was just in its earliest stages, so I'm excited to see it up and running!

We're also hoping to be doing sea trial on Chris & Elisabeth's beautiful new 60 (60-50). Maybe there will be a boat ride available on a beautiful new 60?? (I guess I shouldn't invite.....that's up to Chris & Elisabeth, but now that the 'cat is out of the bag').
