Wesmar Thruster Seal Replacement Frequency
Author Last Post
I originally thought it was coming from the chain locker. I had a plugged drain. I got that cleaned out first thing. I've had lots more rain and fresh water from washing the boat and anchor chain and bow than I've ever gotten over the bow motoring so it seems like the seal makes sense. I have a lube oil container attached to the thruster as well and it's full.
Next time we haul the boat we'll change the seal.
Thanks guys.
Doug

I got water in that area and had thruster seal replaced turns out a crack in the anchor locker would let fresh water in when it rains heavy and my anchor drains are not high enough so about an inch of water comes in underway so salt water comes in Sealed up Crack and all fine

Hi Mike, you mentioned replacing your bow thruster seal after 3 years. Was there any indication of water leaking into the crash locker? We just got this boat in April and took it to South East Alaska for the summer. 3 times in heavy seas our crash locker high water alarm went off. Each time after anchoring I vacuumed the water out and had about 24 oz of water. I have washed the bow down heavily several times a long with heavy rains and have not gotten water in the crash locker, only in heavy seas. I'm guessing it's coming in from the bow thruster seal. In heavy seas the pounding might force the water through the seal.  One owner this summer suggested that might be it as well.  Does anyone else have experience with that?Doug Owens Reel Adventure 53-83

4333 gets a 5 yearly overhaul of the in water seals and bearings, cutlass, rudder, thrusters and stabilisers - never had a leak or any problem.

You say it only happens in heavy weather? Possibly water is getting into the chain locker via the chain spurling pipe or the drains themselves and finding its way into the thruster locker via a crack. The chain locker drains should empty both locker but they are regularly blocked, or partially blocked. Try putting a hose into the chain locker. See if the drain keeps up and if not see if the rising water level forces water into the thruster locker/crash tank.

We fitted a small header tank of oil to a port in the thruster gearbox. The small cup sized 'tank' is above the waterline. Any thruster shaft seal leak would be evident as the oil would leak out. The thruster body itself is heavily sealed with SikaFlex 291. I believe that any leaks from there would show up as stains on the sikaflex.

Good luck!

Garry

Mine made it through 6 years with no leaks after about 20,000 miles. Just replaced them a month ago.

I finished my third season since last replacing the Wesmar bow and stern thruster seals and Wesmar stabilizer seals. I didn't see any guidance in the respective manuals and I searched through our forum posts. Thrusters received normal use but I would say stabilizers receive less than normal. The great majority of my cruising is without the stabilizers. Everything is dry. Boat is stored in fresh water.

Any opinions as to frequency? Thanks.
