The big run of migratory striped bass (Rockfish) is underway on the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. They appeared yesterday out in front of our place on The Rivah. Thousands of gulls follow the feeding fish, fresh from the ocean as evidenced by the sea lice on them, giving their location away as they chase bait fish (menhaden) to the surface. We lowered WASABI, our center console, from its lift and ran 150-200 yards out front and five of us began casting with light tackle into the fray. We hooked up immediately and chaos ensued. In less than one hour we caught more than ten fish, some of them too large to harvest, keeping one slot fish each. Then we did some catch and release just for fun as the sun set. I cleaned the keepers after dark in the yard and three nice slot fish are pictured in the photos. The pictured fish have been gutted, but were fat and full of menhaden when I cleaned them. We Already had a stir fry in the wok planned for last night so we will enjoy these beauties tonight.
